What is PoE -
Power-over-Ethernet?
Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) allows to provide both power and network connectivity to PoE devices (referred to as PD's) across a single Ethernet cable. Powered Devices (PD's) include Wireless Access Points, IP cameras, VoIP phones, PoE LED lighting, and other PD switches, among other things. These devices are powered and connected through a PoE Switch.
There are 2 existing PoE standards
Type 1
PoE (802.3af)
The original PoE standard provides 15.4W of power to the Ethernet port to be sent = 12.95W of delivered power at 100M distance from the switch.
Type 2
PoE+(802.3at)
PoE+ effectively doubles the PoE power to the device by providing 30W of power to the Ethernet port to be sent = 25.5W of delivered power at 100M distance from the switch.

New PoE standard in development - 802.3bt
The next PoE standard, 802.3bt, will bring maximum PoE power to about 90 W.
One of the key target markets for 802.3bt “smart” buildings and IoT, as it incorporates a significant portion of the devices that can be PoE-powered. It will be important in these buildings, which will incorporate hundreds of sensors and all must be monitored and controlled from a single management system.

The real benefit for the customer is that if you’re not sure how much PoE power you’ll need and have a limited budget, you can purchase the “LP” version of the switch, and then, as your PoE needs grow, you can later upgrade the power adapter to get more PoE budget, as opposed to traditional switches, where you would need to completely replace the entire switch to get more power, costing you more in the end.
